Human motion is based on arcs - wow, never thought of that. And when physical truth is also metaphorical truth, that's pretty neat, too.

Yeah I rely a lot on arcs in animation work—motion based on arcs are also super pleasing. "Physical truth is also metaphorical truth"—deep Allison!! Maybe that's the front and back of a t-shirt that would be so bomb ✨

So sorry to hear Coleen, thank you for sharing. If I had been reading this letter on paper I would have annotated it for myself in several places. I just read this article about newsletters on The Cut (https://www.thecut.com/2021/07/email-newsletters-new-literary-style.html), and in it, the writer describes writing newsletters as a "combination of work and social grace". I think that describes, aptly, what you do here.

Thanks Emily as always—this is high praise. One of the unexpected gifts that writing TLB has brought me is connections to artists like you, kindred spirits, conversations.

I went to school with Mike. He was always magic. We'd be tasked with making a shoebox diorama and he'd build a massive, multi-room cardboard dollhouse. No one competed with Mike or measured their success against his, there was no point.

He hasn't left my thoughts for long since learning the news of his passing. It just seems unbelievable he's not in this world at this moment making something incredibly special.

I wish I knew him better. What a loss.

This had me in tears. Thanks for sharing this. He was my longest-running manager in my career as a designer—but also my friend and mentor. When I interviewed him at Twitter he said in answer to a question about personal conflict in the workplace: "at the end of the day, we're all people." That was him, to always remember the humanity in us.

Sorry for your loss Coleen. As is your way you express a truth here about loss - in your words and in between your words. May your work and your words, your friends and your faith give you what you need at this time. Many hugs.

So sorry for your loss. This was tough to read, but a wonderful tribute to your friend. The way you wrote about process continuing at times like these, even to the extent of showing the breakdowns of your work through this period, is truthful and real to a degree that's hard to put into words. A powerful piece -- thank you for writing it.

Thanks for this, and for reading through. I did think about writing as usual but it didn’t seem right. I know it wasn’t the most uplifting but ultimately I’m glad I shared truthfully. Thanks again for your kind words and support.
